Tesla is finally making its grand entry into the Indian market with its first experience center opening on July 15, at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai. After years of speculation and anticipation, the American electric vehicle (EV) pioneer is gearing up to introduce its revolutionary offerings to Indian customers.

This marks a significant milestone for the EV industry in India as Tesla plans to bring its global-standard retail experience with its own direct-to-customer, company-owned showroom. Notably, this is just the beginning. A second showroom is expected to open in Delhi soon, signaling Tesla’s strategic expansion across the country.

Will Tesla Manufacture in India?

For years, Tesla explored the possibility of manufacturing its vehicles locally. However, despite aggressive efforts by the Indian government, including the promise of reduced tariffs under a new EV policy, Tesla has opted to begin operations with fully imported vehicles, at least for now. This means Tesla cars will attract a whopping 110% import tariff, adding a premium to their already high prices.

While local manufacturing might have lowered costs, Tesla’s move aligns with its global strategy to launch in key markets with smaller volumes of imported models as a test bed for demand.

Tesla’s global challenges have set the stage for its expansion into new territories like India. The company is navigating excess manufacturing capacity in its existing factories and tackling declining sales in major markets. Tesla has already hired local personnel for various roles, including store management, sales, and service support, ensuring a strong foundation for its retail presence in the country.

Why Start with Model Y?

Tesla’s Model Y is likely to be the first car launched in India. This move isn’t surprising, considering it’s Tesla’s bestselling model globally. The facelifted Model Y, unveiled in January, has already been spotted testing on Indian roads several times this year. Tesla’s approach seems clear: introduce a proven, globally popular model to establish its foothold in the Indian market.

Commercial import data from January to June shows Tesla has already imported Model Y vehicles, charging equipment, and accessories valued at nearly $1 million. This batch included six Model Y cars, featuring different versions like the Standard Range and Long Range, along with several Superchargers. The logistical groundwork shows Tesla is serious about providing an authentic Tesla experience to its Indian customers.

The Road Ahead for Tesla in India

Tesla’s Indian debut is highly anticipated by automotive enthusiasts, but its success will depend on more than just the brand’s reputation. While Tesla enjoys a loyal following, pricing will be a critical factor in determining its mainstream appeal. The significant import duties pose a notable challenge, and it remains to be seen whether Tesla will reconsider local manufacturing in the coming years.
