Yamaha to Launch 700cc and 900cc Bikes in India

Yamaha enthusiasts in India have long awaited the launch of Yamaha’s larger displacement motorcycles. While the road to their arrival has been riddled with delays, these plans are very much alive. The company is gearing up to introduce its iconic 700cc and 900cc bikes under strict compliance with India’s evolving fuel regulations.

Why the Delay?

The primary reason for the hold-up is India’s upcoming E20 petrol regulations. By October 2025, all motorcycles sold in the country must meet E20 compliance standards. These standards require the motorcycles to operate efficiently with fuel containing 20% ethanol, which isn’t yet widely adopted in global markets. Currently, Yamaha’s lineup of big bikes isn’t E20-compliant.

However, there’s good news. Yamaha has confirmed it already possesses the necessary technology and is actively working to align its motorcycles with these regulations. The bikes are currently undergoing the homologation process, which indicates that their launch might not be far away.

What to Expect in Yamaha’s Big Bike Lineup?

Yamaha plans to bring models from its 07 and 09 families to the Indian market. While an official list hasn’t been released, here are the highlights from these families likely to launch in India:

  • Yamaha MT-07 and Yamaha R7

Powered by Yamaha’s prized 689cc parallel-twin engine, these bikes blend smooth power delivery with an exciting riding experience.

  • Yamaha MT-09 and Yamaha R9

These are equipped with the potent 890cc three-cylinder engine producing 119hp, offering thrilling performance for riders who crave speed and adrenaline.

Unfortunately, the much-anticipated Tenere 700 seems unlikely for India, primarily due to its tall seat height, which could limit its appeal to many riders. Yamaha has previously remarked that this could pose accessibility concerns in the Indian market.

CBU Imports for Exclusivity

All these models are expected to launch as CBU (Completely Built-Up) imports, maintaining Yamaha’s hallmark of quality and exclusivity.

The Future of Yamaha’s Big Bikes in India

The launch of Yamaha’s 700cc and 900cc bikes in India will undoubtedly create ripples in the premium motorcycle segment. As the homologation process progresses, it’s only a matter of time before Yamaha gives Indian riders the chance to own these performance-oriented machines. With their advanced engineering, iconic designs, and Yamaha’s long-standing reputation, these bikes are poised to stand out in the competitive Indian market.
