Hyundai is laying the groundwork to potentially introduce Genesis, its luxury automobile brand, to Indian consumers. The company’s Annual Report 2024–25 reveals that Genesis is under strategic evaluation for its India debut, signaling Hyundai’s ambitions to tap into the country’s premium automotive market.

Long surrounded by speculation, Genesis’ entry into India was previously delayed due to economic challenges and industry disruptions caused by the global health crisis. However, Hyundai’s renewed push suggests a focused plan to expand its luxury footprint.

A Brief Look at Genesis

Launched in late 2015 as Hyundai’s standalone premium brand, Genesis began its independent lineup with the G90 sedan in 2017. Since then, it has earned significant global recognition through impressive offerings like the G80 executive sedan, and the GV70 and GV80 SUVs. Renowned for groundbreaking innovation, sleek design, and exceptional customer experiences, Genesis has steadily carved out its niche in the luxury vehicle segment worldwide.

If brought to India, Genesis would compete head-to-head with heavyweights such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Jaguar Land Rover, Lexus, and Volvo. This bold move aligns with Hyundai’s effort to address the increasing demand for innovative luxury experiences among Indian buyers.

Hyundai India’s Chief Operating Officer, Tarun Garg, shared in the Annual Report, “We are also strategically evaluating the introduction of Genesis, Hyundai’s global luxury marque, to redefine luxury through innovation, design, and differentiated experiences. This aligns with our aspiration to serve the evolving expectations of discerning Indian consumers.”

Leveraging Tax Benefits and Strategic Positioning

Industry insights suggest that Genesis could initially leverage tax relaxations for fully imported vehicles in India, allowing the brand to establish itself without the immediate need for local production. India’s growing appetite for premium SUVs and sedans positions Genesis to benefit from consumer shifts toward luxury mobility solutions.

Hyundai’s Vision for India

Hyundai Motor India has showcased strong growth, with a total production volume of 762,900 units in the last fiscal year. Its domestic sales accounted for 599,330 units, while 163,570 units were exported. Notably, SUVs contributed to 69% of Hyundai’s local sales, with the Creta dominating the midsize SUV space with over a 30% market share.

Additionally, Hyundai marked its 25th anniversary of exporting passenger vehicles from India and is gearing up for a diverse product lineup. By FY 2029–30, Hyundai plans to launch 26 new models, including six electric vehicles and 20 ICE (internal combustion engine) cars, emphasizing eco-friendly technology such as hybrid powertrains.

The brand is also expanding its manufacturing footprint with operations at the Talegaon plant set to commence in FY 2025–26. The potential introduction of Genesis would align seamlessly with Hyundai’s mission to fortify its premium presence and strengthen profit margins in the Indian market.
