Mahindra recently pulled the curtain back on its next generation of SUVs, and among the exciting concepts, one vehicle stole the show: a rugged, compact SUV that looks remarkably like a mini Land Rover Defender. This unexpected reveal has the auto world buzzing with one big question: Is this Mahindra’s answer to the legendary Bolero and a new challenger in the compact SUV space?
A “Mini Defender” for the Indian Market?
The concept, dubbed the “Vision S,” is more than just a design exercise. It signals a bold new direction for Mahindra, which plans to launch a series of next-gen models starting in 2027. With its boxy silhouette and commanding presence, the Vision S immediately brings the iconic Defender to mind, but it’s engineered for a different battleground.
This new SUV will be built on Mahindra’s advanced NU_IQ platform and is expected to measure under four meters. This positions it perfectly to compete in the fiercely contested compact SUV segment, currently dominated by players like the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Hyundai Venue, and Kia Sonet. While its design is futuristic, its purpose seems clear: to offer a tough, stylish, and capable vehicle that could very well be the spiritual successor to the much-loved Bolero or a compact version of the Scorpio.
Mahindra has highlighted that the NU_IQ platform is designed for superior space and utility, promising a generous boot, roomy interiors, and high ground clearance—all qualities that buyers in this segment value. While the final production model will likely see some changes, the core promise of a rugged and practical SUV is unmistakable.
A Glimpse Inside: Modern Tech Meets Practical Design

While the interior of the concept was partially concealed, key details offered a tantalizing preview of what’s to come. In a refreshing move that blends modern technology with user-friendly design, Mahindra has retained several physical buttons for essential controls, a feature many drivers will appreciate.
The cabin is set to be a tech-forward space, featuring a large central infotainment touchscreen, a fully digital instrument cluster, and a panoramic sunroof. Other visible elements included adjustable headrests, large grab handles for a true SUV feel, and a stylish dual-tone dashboard. This combination of practicality and premium features suggests Mahindra is aiming to deliver a well-rounded and comfortable experience.
Ready for Any Powertrain
Mahindra remained tight-lipped about the specific engines that will power the Vision S, but the versatility of the NU_IQ platform is a key advantage. It has been engineered to support a wide range of powertrains, including petrol, diesel, hybrid, and fully electric options.
For the Indian market, it’s reasonable to expect proven engine choices like a 1.2-liter turbo-petrol and a 1.5-liter diesel engine. However, the platform’s future-proof design means that hybrid or all-electric versions are also strong possibilities, allowing Mahindra to adapt to evolving market demands and emission standards.
The Road to Launch
Patience will be key, as this new generation of vehicles is still a few years away. Mahindra has indicated that the production version of the Vision S concept is slated to begin rolling off the assembly line around 2027. While the wait may be long, if the final product lives up to the promise of this exciting concept, it could redefine the compact SUV segment and give Mahindra another blockbuster hit.
