In a move celebrated by off-road purists and luxury enthusiasts alike, Mercedes-Benz India has officially launched the G 450d, reintroducing a diesel engine to its iconic G-Class lineup. Priced at ₹2.90 crore (ex-showroom), this new variant slots into the portfolio, ensuring there’s now a G-Class for every preference—be it petrol, diesel, or the all-new electric G 580.
The heart of the G 450d is a state-of-the-art 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder diesel engine, intelligently supported by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. This powertrain delivers a formidable 362 horsepower and a massive 750 Nm of torque. The integrated starter generator provides an extra 20 hp ‘boost’ at low speeds, translating into explosive off-the-line performance. This engineering marvel propels the boxy SUV from 0 to 100 kmph in just 5.8 seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 210 kmph.
Built for Any Terrain, Laden with Luxury
True to its legacy, the G 450d is not just about straight-line speed. It retains the rugged ladder-frame construction and the three signature, mechanically locking differentials—a feature that separates serious off-roaders from the rest. Its capability is quantified by impressive figures: a 241 mm ground clearance, a 31-degree approach angle, a 30-degree departure angle, and the ability to ford through 700 mm of water.

Stepping inside, the G 450d is a sanctuary of high-tech luxury. The redesigned off-road cockpit neatly groups all essential controls for the differential locks, tyre pressure monitoring, and navigation aids. Dominating the dashboard is the latest MBUX infotainment system with dual 12.3-inch screens, augmented reality navigation, and wireless smartphone integration. For the audiophile, the available Burmester 3D Surround Sound System with Dolby Atmos creates an immersive concert hall experience. Owners can further personalize their vehicle through the exclusive MANUFAKTUR programme, which includes sumptuous two-tone Nappa leather interiors.
Visually, the G 450d receives subtle but distinct updates. New bumpers with vertical louvers, A-pillar cladding, and a roof-edge spoiler enhance aerodynamics. It rides on 20-inch AMG alloy wheels with a high-gloss black finish, and the radiator grille now features four horizontal slats, setting it apart from its siblings while preserving the timeless silhouette that has made the G-Class a legend.
Safety and assistance have been significantly upgraded. The SUV is equipped with a comprehensive suite of features including Active Brake Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, 360-degree cameras, and other Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). A particularly clever feature for adventurers is the ‘Transparent Hood’ function, which uses cameras to project a virtual view of the terrain immediately ahead of and underneath the vehicle onto the central screen, making navigating over large obstacles remarkably intuitive.

Adding to the exclusivity, Mercedes-Benz India has announced that only 50 units of the G 450d will be allocated for the Indian market. This limited-run model is positioned as a more accessible entry into the diesel G-Wagon family, priced ₹20 lakh below the electric G 580.
Santosh Iyer, Managing Director and CEO of Mercedes-Benz India, stated, “The G 450d underscores our commitment to offering the choice of diesel, petrol, and electric powertrains in the G-Class. By combining formidable performance with efficiency, it answers a sustained customer demand for a powerful diesel in this iconic model, ensuring we now have a G-Class for every discerning customer in India.”
To celebrate the G-Class lineage, the brand will also host the ‘G-Tribe Escapade,’ a curated off-road adventure through the challenging and beautiful landscapes of Bhutan for select customers, featuring a fleet of vehicles including the AMG G 63 and the G 580.
