Hyundai Motor India is shifting gears into the luxury segment. In a significant strategic move, the automaker has officially confirmed it is evaluating its global premium brand, Genesis, for an Indian market launch, potentially as early as next year.
This announcement marks a pivotal moment in Hyundai’s Indian journey. Having evolved from a value-focused brand to a formidable force in the premium mass market—bolstered by models like the Tucson and the successful recent IPO—Genesis represents the next logical step upward. It’s Hyundai’s answer to established German luxury marques and a bid to capture a slice of India’s growing appetite for high-end automobiles.
The company’s intention moved from rumor to reality in its latest investor communication. Tarun Garg, COO of Hyundai Motor India, stated, “We are also strategically evaluating the introduction of Genesis.” Adding concrete weight to this plan, the company has appointed Anuraag Singh as the Vertical Head for Genesis India, a clear signal that foundational work for the launch is already underway.
What Could a Genesis India Line-Up Look Like?
Globally, Genesis boasts a diverse portfolio of eight elegant sedans and SUVs, including three dedicated electric vehicles. For the Indian market, the strategy is expected to be sharply focused.

Industry observers predict a strong emphasis on Genesis SUV models. This aligns perfectly with overwhelming Indian consumer preference for high-riding vehicles and the practical need to navigate varied road conditions. The compact electric GV60 crossover emerges as a prime candidate, benefiting from a preferential 5% GST rate for EVs, making it significantly more competitive on price than imported combustion-engine rivals.
Alternatively, the brand could introduce the sleek GV70 or the flagship GV80 SUVs, both of which are also available in fully electric “Electrified” variants, offering a blend of zero-emission driving and premium presence.
Initially, Genesis models will likely arrive in India via the Completely Built Unit (CBU) route, imported in limited numbers. However, as demand grows, Hyundai has the option to transition to local Completely Knocked Down (CKD) assembly to improve affordability and volume. If all goes according to plan, the first Genesis could be gracing Indian showrooms by the end of 2025, marking the beginning of a new chapter for Hyundai and for luxury car buyers in the country.
