After a noticeable absence from the Indian market, the Honda CR-V is officially gearing up for a return. Honda has confirmed it will bypass the current generation and launch the all-new, seventh-generation CR-V in India, positioning it as the new flagship above the popular Elevate and the upcoming compact SUV, codenamed ‘Alpha’.
This isn’t just a simple model refresh; it’s a complete technological overhaul. The development is in full swing in Japan, centered on a next-generation mid-size platform that promises to be a game-changer for the brand.
A Foundation of Strength and Lightness
The heart of the new CR-V will be its advanced platform, which is significantly lighter than the structure used in the previous model. This foundational shift isn’t exclusive to the CR-V; it will be shared with future iterations of beloved models like the Civic and Accord, with over 60% part commonality. This strategy allows Honda to streamline production while ensuring robustness across its lineup.
The most exciting updates, however, lie under the hood and inside the cabin.
A Smarter, More Powerful Hybrid System
The next-gen CR-V coming to India will feature a completely reengineered hybrid powertrain. It will combine a new 2.0-litre direct-injection petrol engine with a rare-earth-free electric motor and a new generator. Even the high-voltage battery pack is a new, more efficient unit.
Perhaps the most significant upgrade is the shift to an electric all-wheel-drive (AWD) system. Instead of a mechanical linkage, a second, independent traction motor will power the rear wheels. This intelligent setup not only improves traction but also has a direct benefit for passengers: it reduces the size of the central tunnel, freeing up precious legroom and enhancing comfort for those in the back seats. Combined with the new platform, these innovations could make the new CR-V Hybrid up to 90 kg lighter, promising both better performance and efficiency.
A Cabin Designed for the Modern Driver
Inside, drivers can expect a major tech upgrade. Honda is developing a larger, more immersive infotainment system, likely around 15 inches, to replace the current 9-inch screen. This will provide a much more commanding view for navigation and entertainment.
Another practical change will be the move to a steering column-mounted gear selector. This seemingly small shift will free up considerable space in the center console, leading to a more open, minimalist, and functional cabin layout.
The Indian Roadmap and Competitive Landscape
The global unveiling of the next-generation Honda CR-V is expected in 2027, with an Indian launch likely in the same calendar year. Upon its arrival, it will enter a premium segment to compete with the likes of the Volkswagen Tayron and the Skoda Kodiaq. It’s important to note that, unlike some rivals, the Indian-spec CR-V is unlikely to offer a three-row seating option.
Honda has a rich history with the CR-V in India, having first introduced it in 2003. However, the company had to discontinue the model in 2020 as it shut down its Greater Noida plant where the SUV was assembled. A key question that remains is where and how the new CR-V will be localized, with Honda’s Tapukara plant in Rajasthan being the most probable candidate.
The brand is undoubtedly aware that the previous generation’s premium pricing led to a tepid market response. This time around, the industry and consumers alike are hopeful that Honda will price the next-generation CR-V competitively, ensuring its successful return to a market that has always held a soft spot for this iconic SUV.
