Honda has recently filed a design patent for its retro-inspired NS125 LA scooter in India. Though the registration is official, it does not appear that Honda plans to launch the model in the local market anytime soon. Instead, this move likely serves to safeguard their intellectual property, aligning with the automaker’s strategy to protect its unique designs.
Already available in select international markets like China, the NS125 LA boasts vintage aesthetics with smooth, flowing contours and minimalistic design elements. The scooter is powered by a 124cc, single-cylinder, air-cooled engine delivering 9.5hp and 10Nm of torque. For context, these specifications are similar to those of the Honda Activa 125 sold in India, which offers an 8.4hp output paired with 10.5Nm of torque. Suspension is handled via a telescopic fork in the front and a single rear shock, while the wheel setup consists of a 12-inch front and 10-inch rear configuration.
Noteworthy features of the NS125 LA include a modern TFT dashboard with smartphone connectivity. This technology enables convenient functionalities such as vehicle tracking, tire pressure monitoring, and ride statistics. Additionally, certain variants in overseas markets come equipped with ABS for enhanced safety.
Despite the patent filing in India, industry trends suggest this is more about intellectual property protection than plans to sell the model locally. This aligns with Honda’s history, as they have previously registered other international models, including the Honda Scoopy, NPF125, CB190TR, and CG160, without any subsequent launch in the Indian market.
The NS125 LA’s registration reflects Honda’s dedication to preserving its designs in a highly competitive segment. Although Indian customers might not get the chance to experience this retro scooter firsthand just yet, Honda’s latest move ensures their innovative designs remain protected globally.
