Honda Cars India is gearing up for a big shift with several new strong hybrid models in the pipeline, including the next-gen City sedan, a 7-seater SUV, and a midsize SUV. These models aim to capture consumer interest with strong hybrid technology and aggressive pricing.

The City e:HEV, which has been available for three years, delivers impressive performance with its 1.5L petrol hybrid engine (124 bhp, 26.5 kmpl mileage). However, despite its technological edge, its high price tag of Rs 20.85 lakh deterred widespread adoption. Addressing this, Honda’s new hybrid vehicles will emphasize significant localization to achieve a more affordable price range of Rs 15-30 lakh.

These vehicles will be built on Honda’s newly-developed PF2 modular platform designed for strong hybrid powertrains. With stricter CAFE emission standards on the horizon, demand for hybrid models in India is predicted to grow.

Honda’s updated electrification strategy reflects its global push for hybrid technology. This response to the limited success of the City e:HEV aims to increase market penetration with affordable, fuel-efficient options.

Additionally, competition in the Indian hybrid market is heating up. Automakers like Hyundai, Kia, and Skoda-Volkswagen are also planning hybrid launches. For instance, Kia’s hybrid Seltos is expected by mid-2026, Hyundai’s Creta hybrid by early 2027, and Skoda-Volkswagen’s hybrid SUVs and sedans by 2028. These companies are employing localized platforms like Hyundai’s IMP21 to optimize pricing for the Indian market.

Honda is not just keeping up but is keen to lead by offering well-priced and localized strong hybrid models, providing Indian consumers with eco-friendly, high-performance alternatives.
