Maruti Suzuki has taken a significant step toward India’s greener automotive future with the global debut of the Fronx Flex-Fuel Vehicle (FFV). Unveiled at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show, this prototype signals the brand’s readiness to introduce vehicles capable of running on high-ethanol blends, with an Indian market launch anticipated next year.
The heart of this new Fronx is its re-engineered 1.2-litre petrol engine. While the block may be familiar, engineers have given it a comprehensive overhaul. With upgraded internal components, a recalibrated engine management system, and a modified fuel system, this powerplant is now built to efficiently handle a wide spectrum of fuels—from regular E20 petrol all the way up to E85, a blend containing up to 85% ethanol.
This flexibility is a key advantage. It means owners will have the freedom to choose fuel based on price and availability without worrying about damaging their vehicle. For a country like India, which is actively promoting ethanol to reduce both oil imports and emissions, this technology arrives at a pivotal moment.
A Familiar Look with Strategic Tweaks
Visually, the Fronx FFV remains true to the stylish, coupe-like SUV design that has become popular. Suzuki has kept modifications subtle, adding distinctive “Flex Fuel” badges and green-accented graphics to signal its eco-friendly credentials. The show car also featured sleek blacked-out alloy wheels, enhancing its sporty character. Dimensions are unchanged, ensuring the practical interior space Indian buyers appreciate remains intact.

The Japanese-spec model, however, offered a tantalizing glimpse into what could be in store for India. It was equipped with advanced features not currently available on the Indian Fronx, including an Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) suite, a more powerful 1.5-litre engine option, and an AllGrip Select all-wheel-drive system. The potential introduction of ADAS to the Indian market, in particular, would mark a significant upgrade for the segment.
A More Premium Cabin Experience
Inside, the cabin receives a welcome refresh. A new dual-tone interior theme and the addition of ventilated front seats elevate the sense of quality and comfort, positioning this Fronx as a more premium offering. This move suggests Maruti Suzuki is not just focusing on alternative fuel but also on enhancing the overall ownership experience.
Currently, the Indian-spec Fronx offers a choice of a peppy 1.0-litre turbo-petrol, the efficient 1.2-litre DualJet petrol, and a practical CNG variant.
The debut of the Fronx FFV on a global stage, following extensive testing of ethanol-compatible engines in India, strongly indicates that the country will be a priority market. As the government’s ethanol blending program progresses toward E20 and begins planning for even higher blends like E30 and E85, the Fronx Flex-Fuel is poised to be a timely and strategic addition to Maruti Suzuki’s lineup, blending environmental consciousness with modern features and familiar Maruti Suzuki value.
