A new regulation from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is set to change how owners of classic vehicles in Uttar Pradesh can use their prized possessions. While the state has officially started the registration process for vintage cars and bikes, there’s a significant catch: these vehicles are no longer permitted for regular commuting or commercial activities.
This decision clarifies the government’s stance on the role of vintage vehicles, framing them as items of historical significance meant for preservation and occasional exhibition rather than daily transport. According to the authorities in UP, the primary purpose of this new registration framework is to protect automotive heritage. As a result, driving these classic beauties for your daily office run or as a commercial taxi is now officially off the table. This move is part of a broader initiative to formalize the status of vintage vehicles across the state.
To qualify for a vintage registration, a car or bike must be over 50 years old from its original registration date. A key condition for this special status is that the vehicle must retain its originality. This means the chassis, engine, and body shell must not have undergone significant modifications. For owners seeking a new registration certificate for their classic, the cost is set at approximately ₹20,000. If you are simply renewing an existing registration, the fee is a more modest ₹5,000. It’s important to note that these rules do not apply to tractors or other agricultural vehicles, regardless of their age.
The registration process requires the owner to submit an application to their local Regional Transport Office (RTO). Following the application, inspectors will conduct a thorough examination of the vehicle to verify its authenticity and ensure it meets the eligibility criteria, documenting the inspection with photographs. The authorities have committed to processing these applications within 60 days.
Once registered, these vintage vehicles will receive unique number plates with a special format, such as “UP VA YY xxxx,” distinguishing them from regular vehicles. Interestingly, the government has exempted these classics from needing High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP). For owners in UP, getting their vintage vehicle registered or renewed is now crucial to ensure its legal standing. While the restriction on regular driving might be disappointing for some enthusiasts, the silver lining is that you can still showcase your classic cars and bikes at rallies and exhibitions, sharing your passion with fellow admirers.
